There are many reasons why organizations initiate change, and in today’s fast-paced and technologically savvy business environment, change is happening more rapidly than in any time in history. With the Internet, organizations are now much closer to each other and on a global scale. The aging Baby Boom generation will soon see experience and talent exit the workforce en mass, leaving a gap that organizations need to fill. More recently, organizations have had to respond to a global economic crisis. These are only a few of the many causes of change, but understanding them will help an organization to adapt. Is a mere understanding of what the causes are enough? This presentation will offer several theories on the change process. Resistance to change will also be discussed. Finally, ways to make the change more comfortable for members of the organization will be presented…softening the blow of the change process and solidifying it once it’s complete.
Scott MacFarlane is a Doctoral Student at Regent University’s School of Business and Leadership. A retired Navy Chief Petty Officer, he worked as a First-Line and Mid-Level Leader, and taught leadership curriculum at the Center for Naval Leadership. His credentials include a B.S. in Industrial Technology from Roger Williams University, Master of Science in Management from Troy University, Navy Master Training Specialist, and Workforce Development Professional. He is now an Instructional Designer for Newport News Shipbuilding and an Adjunct Professor for Strayer University. He resides in Virginia Beach, VA with his wife Beth and son Kyle.
